In the ever-changing landscape of social media, Meta Platforms, Inc., formerly known as Facebook Inc., has introduced a new app called Threads. What’s it all mean?

You couldn’t read the news last month without hearing about Threads, Meta’s new Twitter-esque (now “X-esque) social media platform, with 100 million signups in just days of it’s introduction.

This month, Threads is back in the news with a whopping 80% loss of its initial subscribers (Meta is saying that’s “normal” and that their base will grow as they add new features).

So, what is Threads, how does it compare to other platforms, can your practice benefit, and is it still worth it to sign up? Let’s take a look…

Threads Pros and Cons

Pros of Threads

1. Integrated Experience. Threads is designed to work seamlessly with Instagram, allowing users to share their status, location, and other details with their Instagram “close friends” list. This integration provides a more personalized and intimate social media experience.

2. Customization. Threads offers extensive customization options for users. They can choose who can see their status, what type of status to share, and how often to update it. This level of control enhances user privacy and personalization.

3. Automatic Status Updates. One of the unique features of Threads is its ability to update a user’s status automatically based on their location, motion, and phone’s battery level. This feature provides a dynamic way for users to share their day-to-day activities.

Cons of Threads

1. Privacy Concerns. The automatic status update feature of Threads has raised privacy concerns. The app’s continuous tracking of a user’s location and activities could potentially lead to misuse of data.

2. Limited Audience. As of now, Threads only allows sharing with a user’s close friends list on Instagram. While this enhances privacy, it also limits the audience reach, which may not be ideal for influencers or businesses looking to engage a broader audience. Threads is currently only available as an app on mobile devices. In addition, the rollout of Threads has been curtailed in Europe due to legal issues.

3. Dependency on Instagram. Threads’ functionality is heavily dependent on Instagram. Users who do not use Instagram or prefer other platforms may find Threads less appealing. Now that we’ve reviewed what is good and bad about Threads, let compare it to other social media platforms…

Threads vs. Facebook

Obviously, the two platforms are owned by the same company, so what are the differences between them?

1. User Base and Purpose. Facebook is a general-purpose social media platform with a broad user base, while Threads is designed for a more specific purpose – to share updates with a close circle of friends on Instagram. Facebook is used for a variety of purposes, including sharing updates, connecting with friends, joining groups, and even for business and advertising. Threads, on the other hand, is more focused on sharing personal status updates with a select group of friends.

2. Privacy and Audience: Facebook allows users to share posts publicly, with friends, or with specific people, while Threads is designed to share updates only with a user’s close friends list on Instagram. This makes Threads a more private platform compared to Facebook.

3. Integration. Threads is heavily integrated with Instagram, allowing users to share their status, location, and other details with their close friends list. Facebook, on the other hand, is a standalone platform, although it does allow cross-posting to Instagram.

4. Features. Facebook offers a wide range of features, including text posts, photo and video sharing, live video, stories, marketplace, groups, and events. Threads, in contrast, is more limited in its features, focusing on status updates and messages.

5. Automatic Status Updates. One of the unique features of Threads is its ability to update a user’s status automatically based on their location, motion, and phone’s battery level. Facebook does not have this feature. To summarize, while both Threads and Facebook are products of Meta, they serve different purposes and user bases. Facebook is a comprehensive social media platform with a wide range of features and a broad user base (which is aging). Threads, on the other hand, is a more intimate and private platform, designed for sharing personal updates with a close circle of friends.

Threads vs. X(formerly Twitter)

Threads and X are two distinct social media platforms, each with its unique features and user experiences.

1. User Base and Purpose. X is a platform designed for public conversations and broad interactions. It is used by individuals, influencers, journalists, businesses, and even politicians to share thoughts, news, and updates. Threads, on the other hand, is designed for a more intimate and personal sharing experience, allowing users to share status updates with a close circle of friends on Instagram.

2. Privacy and Audience. X posts are generally public and can be seen by anyone, unless the user has a private account. Threads, however, is designed to share updates only with a user’s close friends list on Instagram, making it a more private platform.

3. Features. Twitter is primarily text-based, although it does support images, videos, and GIFs. It also offers features like threads (a series of connected tweets), retweets, likes, and direct messages. Threads, on the other hand, focuses on status updates and messages, with the unique feature of automatic status updates based on a user’s location, motion, and phone’s battery level.

4. Integration. Threads is heavily integrated with Instagram, allowing for a seamless sharing experience. X, on the other hand, is a standalone platform, although it does allow for cross-posting to other platforms.

5. Real-Time Information. Twitter is known for its real-time updates and is often used for news dissemination. Threads, with its focus on personal status updates, does not serve this purpose.

Threads vs. Instagram

Threads and Instagram are both products of Meta. While Instagram has been a popular social media platform for years, Threads is a newer addition to the social media landscape. This essay aims compare Threads with Instagram, focusing on their features, user experiences, and purposes.

1. User Base and Purpose. Instagram is a broad-based social media platform used for sharing photos, videos, and stories, connecting with friends, following influencers, and discovering new content. Threads, on the other hand, is designed for a more specific purpose – to share status updates and messages with a close circle of friends on Instagram.

2. Privacy and Audience. Instagram allows users to share posts with all their followers or with a select group of close friends through the ‘Close Friends’ feature. Threads, however, is designed to share updates only with a user’s close friends list on Instagram, making it a more private platform.

3. Integration. Threads is heavily integrated with Instagram, allowing for a seamless sharing experience. Users can share their status, location, and other details with their close friends list on Instagram directly from Threads.

4. Features. Instagram offers a wide range of features, including photo and video posts, stories, IGTV, reels, shopping, and direct messages. Threads, in contrast, is more limited in its features, focusing on status updates and messages.

5. Automatic Status Updates. One of the unique features of Threads is its ability to update a user’s status automatically based on their location, motion, and phone’s battery level. Instagram does not have this feature. In sum, while both Threads and Instagram are products of Meta, they serve different purposes and user bases. Instagram is a comprehensive social media platform with a wide range of features and a broad user base. Threads, on the other hand, is a more intimate and private platform, designed for sharing personal updates with a close circle of friends. The choice between the two would depend on a user’s specific needs and preferences.

The Bottom Line on Threads for Your Dental Practice

So should your practice invest time and money in Threads? Given that it’s literally a part of Instagram, if your practice has thousands of Instagram followers, it may be worthwhile for you.

Additionally, if your patient population is generally younger, it may be a good bet, but only if you already have, or are committed to building, an Instagram audience. If, on the other hand, you have built significant traffic on another platform, it would be wise to continue to cultivate that audience as opposed to dropping it and moving all of your attention to Threads.

Received wisdom is, concentrate on one or two platforms, and “own” those, rather than spreading yourself too thin. Keep in mind that Threads’ sudden popularity is partly due to the ease with which you can sign up and share your contacts from Instagram, not necessarily because it is such a great platform – there are still a bunch of bugs and inconveniences as of this writing.

Also keep in mind that Threads does present significant privacy issues, as described above, and that you cannot cancel your account without cancelling Instagram. Nevertheless, it may be smart to sign up as the platform will be adding new fetures, it’s easy to do, and well, you have to be where the patients and prospect are, am I right?
